A boat carrying mourners capsizes in the Volta region, leaving 20 people dead.

In the Volta Region, a boat conveying mourners from Azizanya to Azizakpe overturned. More than 20 of the passengers on board have reportedly been confirmed dead, but rescue crews are working to save the other passengers.

The disaster was confirmed by Mr. Daniel Adzakpa, an Assemblyman from the Azizakpe Electoral District.

He did say that the boat was taking the locals to a funeral on Saturday because there had been a storm that morning.

According to Mr. Adzakpa, a boat is only allowed to carry 25 people at a time, but on this tragic day, there were more than 25 people on board.

 “The boat was overloaded,” he stated on TV3‘s Midday Live on Saturday, March 18.

Hundreds of locals and mourners came to the riverbank following the tragic tragedy, hoping and praying for the best outcome.

The locals, who were mainly women, were praying aloud on the riverbanks for the missing people to be discovered.
